Director of Children's Ministries Job Description
JOB SUMMARY: The Director of Children's Ministries, in conjunction with the Christian Formation committee and the clergy, is responsible for planning, coordinating, and overseeing educational activities that enhance spiritual development and ministry involvement for children at St. Thomas' Church. This person will be vital to the overall educational mission of the church by ensuring quality, lively programs for children through 8th grade.
HOURS: 20 hours per week, year-round, with potential to negotiate additional hours for youth ministry oversight
SALARY: $18,000-$25,000, commensurate with experience
START DATE: August 1, 2010
PRIMARY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
•· * Develop and/or procure Sunday School curriculum that is spiritually appropriate and engaging
•· * Recruit, train, schedule, and provide guidance to teachers and volunteers
•· * Create and maintain a calendar of events and communicate regularly with teachers and parents
•· * Track attendance records and proactively encourage regular attendance among parents and children
•· * Prepare classrooms, materials, and lessons for weekly and special classes
•· * Collaborate with clergy, Christian Formation committee, teachers, and volunteers for long-range and short-term planning of curriculum, lessons and activities
•· * Conduct regular assessment of program to ensure children are program goals are being met
•· * Oversee procurement/development and delivery of confirmation curriculum for youth who wish to be confirmed in the Christian faith and become members of St. Thomas' Episcopal Church
•· * Help to assimilate newly confirmed and high-school youth into youth ministry and congregational life
•· * Ensure St. Thomas' children's ministries are within guidelines of the Maryland Diocese and adapt Diocesan programs to the needs of the local church where appropriate
* Ensure service learning and outreach activities are incorporated into curriculum
•· * Recruit and guide a volunteer Nursery Coordinator to oversee scheduling of nursery helpers and care of children in the nursery
•· * Identify new people (children, youth, and parents) and actively incorporate them into St. Thomas' activities
•· * Plan and lead children's events such as Lenten activities, Christmas Eve pageant, St. Thomas' annual Holiday Outreach evening, Paul's Place camp, potential Vacation Bible School program, and summer worship for children
•· * Consult with the clergy and Christian Formation committee to prepare an annual budget
•· * Maintain appropriate supplies and ensure they are properly organized and easily accessible
•· * Attend regular meetings with staff, clergy, and Christian Formation committee
•· * Prepare and submit written updates for weekly bulletin, monthly newsletter, and annual church report, as well as maintain website content relative to children's education and activities
•· * Act as liaison between St. Thomas' Church and St. Thomas Parish Day School
•· * Potential to take on responsibility and negotiate additional hours for oversight of youth ministry programs for grades 6-12
QUALIFICATIONS:
•· * Possess an interest in and passion for children and youth
•· * Committed in Christian faith and to being/becoming an active member of St. Thomas' Church
•· * Flexibility, creative thinking and enthusiasm
•· * Ability to work independently and within a team
•· * Strong communication and organization skills
•· * Proficiency with Internet, Microsoft Office, and e-mail computer applications
•· * Bachelor's degree or a combination of course work and workshops related to Christian Education
Professional Evaluation: The clergy and representation from the Christian Formation Committee will complete formal evaluations at 3 months and 1 year from hire.
